Although Maryland is not known for it's sinkholes, they do happen.

The most common States where sinkholes are more likely to occur:

Florida

Texas

Alabama

Missouri

Kentucky

Tennessee

Pennsylvania

Notice that New Hampshire and Brooklyn, NY are not on this list!

Sinkholes are naturally occurring holes in the surface

of the earth.  They can form gradually or suddenly.

They form in areas where water flowing underground

has dissolved rock, leading to underground voids.

It's become imperative to
