Hands Free, Not Risk Free

Just the other day a friend was in an accident, his fault.  He was at a light and texting on his phone
and he's not exactly sure what happened but the next thing he knew
he had rolled and smashed into the car in front of him.  The front end of his truck which was hauling a
trailer was  demolished.  The car in front of him, well the driver didn't even have a license and
of course no insurance.

and then of course there's the hands free problem too.........
When I put the key into the ignition on my relatively new vehicle the very next thing
that happens is that my car links up with my cell phone.  This is bluetooth technology, something
that until very recently was foreign to me....ok, so I'm a little behind the times.

The buttons to answer the phone, hang up the phone and control the volume are
on my steering wheel.  It didn't take me long to realize that accessing these buttons
could be hazardous.  Well, anytime that you're mentally distracted or remove your eyes
from the road, let's face it you're distracted.

Of course AAA has done a report about this, here is the article:

For me, I have to say that there are many times I don't answer the phone
while driving, even with hands free capabilities.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
Use common sense while on the road for your safety and the safety of others.

Keeping you safe on the road.

Move Over, It Saves Lives

The only reason we keep talking about the Move Over Law is because
as member's of the towing industry we believe it is our duty to bring
awareness to this topic that directly affects tow truck drivers and their families.

Here is another story of a hit and run crash that killed
tow truck driver Roger Perez-Borotto in Pinellas County, Fl.

He was just doing his job helping a stranded motorist on the
side of the road.

A Go Fund Me account has been established to
help Roger's wife and 4 year old daughter.

The towing industry has their job to do too, companies
need continual training for their team on how to be safe on the road.

We do our best here at George's Custom Towing.
Safety is a priority.

MOVE OVER, IT SAVES LIVES

We are doing our best to get the message
out to the community where we work.

Random Acts of Kindness Week

In the tow truck business we get to perform random acts of kindness
throughout our daily travels.

Here's a list of some simple ways you can extend kindness........and you're
probably already doing it!

50 Fun Random Acts of Kindness Week Ideas:

1. Pay it Backward: buy coffee for the person behind you in line.
2. Compliment the first three people you talk to today.
3. Send a positive text message to five different people right now.
4. Post inspirational sticky notes around your neighborhood, office, school, etc.
5. Tell someone they dropped a dollar (even though they didn’t). Then give them a dollar.
6. Donate old towels or blankets to an animal shelter.
7. Say hi to the person next to you on the elevator.
8. Surprise a neighbor with freshly baked cookies or treats!
9. Let someone go in front of you in line who only has a few items.
10. Leave a gas gift card at a gas pump.
11. Throw a party to celebrate someone just for being who they are, which is awesome.
12. Have a LinkedIn account? Write a recommendation for coworker or connection.
13. Leave quarters at the laundromat.
14. Encounter someone in customer service who is especially kind? Take an extra five minutes to tell their manager.
15. Leave unused coupons next to corresponding products in the grocery store.
16. Leave a note on someone’s car telling them how awesome they parked.
17. Try to make sure every person in a group conversation feels included.
18. Write a kind message on your mirror with a dry erase marker for yourself, your significant other or a family member.
19. Place a positive body image notes in jean pockets at a department store.
20. Smile at five strangers.
21. Set an alarm on your phone to go off at three different times during the day. In those moments, do something kind for someone else.
22. Send a gratitude email to a coworker who deserves more recognition.
23. Practice self-kindness and spend 30 minutes doing something you love today.
24. Give away stuff for free on Craig’s List.
25. Write a gratitude list in the morning and again in the evening.
26. Know parents who could use a night out? Offer to babysit for free.
27. Hold up positive signs for traffic or in a park for people exercising outside!
28. Return shopping carts for people at the grocery store.
29. Buy a plant. Put it in a terracotta pot. Write positive words that describe a friend on the pot. Give it to that friend!
30. Write a positive comment on your favorite blog, website, or a friend’s social media account.
31. Have a clean up party at a beach or park.
32. While you’re out, compliment a parent on how well-behaved their child is.
33. Leave a kind server the biggest tip you can afford.
34. When you’re throwing something away on the street, pick up any litter around you and put that in the trash too.
35. Pay the toll for the person behind you.
36. Put 50 paper hearts in a box. On each cutout write something that is special about your partner or a friend. Give them the box and tell them to pull out a heart anytime they need a pick-me-up.
37. Everyone is important. Learn the names of your office security guard, the person at the front desk and other people you see every day. Greet them by name. Also say “hello” to strangers and smile. These acts of kindness are so easy, and they almost always make people smile.
38. Write your partner a list of things you love about them.
39. Purchase extra dog or cat food and bring it to an animal shelter.
40. Find opportunities to give compliments. It costs nothing, takes no time, and could make someone’s entire day. Don’t just think it. Say it.
41. Take flowers or treats to the nurses’ station at your nearest hospital.
42. Keep an extra umbrella at work, so you can lend it out when it rains.
43. Send a ‘Thank you’ card or note to the officers at your local police or fire station.
44. Take muffins or cookies to your local librarians.
45. Run an errand for a family member who is busy.
46. Leave a box of goodies in your mailbox for your mail carrier.
47. Tape coins around a playground for kids to find.
48. Put your phone away while in the company of others.
49. Email or write to a former teacher who made a difference in your life.
50. When you hear that discouraging voice in your head, tell yourself something positive — you deserve kindness too!

We could all use a little kindness sometimes

Blinding Snow Causes Massive Pile Up

Fredericksburg, PA

The crash happened Saturday at 9:30am from what appears
to be a whiteout condition, with people unable to see the road.

64 vehicles were involved in the pile up on I 78 in Bethel Township,
there were three reported deaths and multiple injuries.

15 Tow Truck companies were called out to help with
the removal of vehicles.

According to eyewitness reports the weather went
from clear and sunny to blowing snowdrifts and
total whiteout conditions.

Our hearts go out to those
who lost family members and to the injured.

Tow Truck Driver Appeals

Across the country we're hearing the same thing over
and over again, people are not stopping for tow trucks.

If you see flashing yellow lights you're supposed to stop
or MOVE OVER to the next lane.

Here's another story out of Michigan:

Gimme a break: Tow truck operators say drivers come too close

HURON COUNTY — Slow down.
The two words have been pounded into our heads since driver’s training.
But officials say signs, cones, barrels, lights, barriers, traffic controllers and other means sometimes aren’t enough for people to heed the warning and move over for emergency and tow vehicles, which is also inked in Michigan’s “Move Over Law.”

“Slow down, just give us room to work, that’s all we’re asking,” said Bill Simmons, who owns Oak Beach Auto Repair in Port Austin. Simmons called the Tribune this week, frustrated.
He said it was bright and sunny with good visibility when he arrived to tow a vehicle out of a ditch on Caseville Road on Thursday morning. The road was icy. Cones were out and his lights were on, he said. The winch cable between the tow truck and the car was in the road.

“We just had someone hit our cable,” Simmons said. “It scraped the roof of their car.”
He said the car never stopped. So he called police.

Restitution

When people refuse to follow laws - laws that are meant to protect,
than justice must take the reigns.

Such was the case with Steven Dolan who was convicted of
homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle.

You see Steven Dolan struck and killed Nate Walsh, a tow truck driver who
was on the shoulder of the highway tending to a disabled vehicle.

The Judge sentenced Steven Dolan to five years probation,
$11,309 in restitution costs and a staggered jail term.
Steven is to spend two weeks in jail on the anniversary
of the fatal crash for the next five years, this
will serve to remind him of the life he took.

Lady Gaga Scored

If only, if only the game had the same emotion as Gaga's rendition of
our National Anthem.

Unfortunately I decided at half time to call it quits, it appeared to me
that there was much sloppiness going on and quite alot of
mean spirited activity. Did you see the Bronco's guy grab the
face helmet of the Panther's player.................what's that?

As we all know it was the Bronco's that pulled it out with
a score of 24 and the Panther's never moved from the 1st qtr
score of 10.  What was that move anyway...........climbing over all
the players for a touchdown?

and then we had the ads..........

ok, maybe it's just me...........but nothing left a lasting memory!

Oh well, the 50th Super Bowl has come and gone.

and here it is Monday morning and we're back on the job

MOVE OVER, It Saves Lives

A Message from AAA

Governor O'Malley expanded the State of Maryland's
Move Over laws to now include Tow Truck Operators.

This law went into effect October 1, 2014 and
comes with a hefty fine of $500 if not adhered to.

The law states if you see a tow truck driver on the shoulder,
you must move into an open lane away from the tow truck
or slow down to a safe speed.

This is the same law protecting first responders; police,
emergency vehicles and now tow trucks.

Let's keep it safe for

Gearing Up for Daytona 500

Once a sport that began on country back roads, NASCAR has hit
the fast lane in terms of popularity.  NASCAR, which stands for
National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, is now the
No. 1 spectator sport in the country and a business that earns
billions of dollars each year.

Stock car racing traces its history back to the days of Prohibition,
when drivers who ran moonshine secretly transported their illegal
product using cars they had modified to increase not only cargo space,
but also speed in order to outrun police. When Prohibition ended,
many drivers - especially those in the rural South continued racing
for profit and entertainment.

In 1947, Bill France Sr., a former driver and race promoter in
Daytona Beach, Fl, gathered the racing community to discuss the
idea of a governing body and NASCAR was born a year later. It's
first sanctioned race was held Feb. 15, 1958.

NASCAR'S biggest race is the Daytona 500, which begins the nine
month racing season each February.

George's Custom Towing is gearing up
our Race Recovery Team!
